Dubai becomes a ghost town

DUBAI — Never before has a head of state, perhaps, heralded as much security measures in the UAE as US President George W. Bush’s visit yesterday did, bringing the bustling Dubai to almost a standstill. The authorities, who had already declared a public holiday in Dubai, yesterday closed major roads and bridges in a sweeping and unprecedented security operation.

George W. Bush, on his current regional tour, flew in to Dubai from the UAE capital Abu Dhabi, and was received at the airport by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai.

Renowned for its normally frantic pace of life, the booming emirate of Dubai could hardly have presented a more stark contrast with its deserted roads from as early as 6am until 4pm, and myriad construction projects underway in the emirate, including the world’s tallest skyscraper and a world-shaped cluster of man-made islands, grounded to a complete halt for the day.

Several helicopters could be seen overhead while small groups of armed police manned key intersections.

Most residents stayed indoors but as the day progressed, essential staff and passengers travelling to and from Dubai International Airport tried to manoeuvre around the city. However, they found themselves stuck on blocked roads, or caught up in traffic on the Emirates Road.

The city limped back to normalcy later in the evening.

An elderly western expatriate on a regular walk told Khaleej Times, “This is the first time I have seen anything like this. It’s a good day for a walk,” he said, as he surveyed the empty streets around him that would usually be full of traffic.

Studying DNA: From Neanderthals to Aliens

Posted by truthpills on 2009/02/21

From Koinonia House

DNA is the digital code for life, the code that not only tells each part of the body how to form, but also what to do, how to do it, and when to do it. DNA can prove who committed a crime 20 years ago or explain why we inherit certain family diseases. Some scientists hope DNA can tell us about our ancient relatives, whom we only know from bones in caves. Others hope that DNA can even tell us about life on other planets.

Neanderthal DNA:
Two groups of researchers working together have succeeded in sequencing more than 3 billion bases of Neanderthal DNA from a collection of fragments that make up more than 60 percent of the Neanderthal genome. Scientists from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, in Leipzig, Germany, and the 454 Life Sciences Corporation, in Branford, Connecticut believe they can now compare these DNA sequences to the sequences that have been done of the chimpanzee and modern human genomes. These efforts will help unravel the mystery of just how distant a relative the Neanderthal is.

Synthetic DNA:
Scientists in Florida have created a new kind of DNA in a laboratory, and consider it a possible model for what alien DNA could look like. Biochemist Steven A. Benner of the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution in Gainesville has put together synthetic replicas of the four nucleotides – A C T G – that are the foundational molecules for DNA. Benner took those original nucleotides and mixed them up a little to form similar but different synthetic nucleotides the scientists have dubbed Z, P, V, J, Iso-C, Iso-G, X and K. Unlike the real things, his synthetic nucleotides can’t replicate – anymore than a robot can have babies. While what Benner’s team has created cannot be considered artificial life, he is confident that it will only take a few more years and some little pushes to help his laboratory-created molecules get busy.

Say No to Bailouts

Posted by truthpills on 2009/02/21

The Deal

Here’s the deal. A bunch of jet-set corporate executives made bad bets for their companies and lost, big time. Normally, these companies would go bankrupt. This time, our government is taking money from our families to prop up these insolvent companies.
We’re not making this up.

TARP and the bailouts of Bear Stearns and Citigroup are just the tip of the iceberg. So far, our government committed more than $8 TRILLION to funding failed companies (that’s over $60,000 per family in America!), and has spent $1.4 trillion of that in just a few months. (Mouse over the circles below to see the details.)
Yeah, it’s really that bad.

What’s worse? It’s not making a difference. The line for bailouts is growing, and includes the telecom industry, airlines, as well as city and state governments.
We’ve got to do something.

Obama talks a tough game about bailouts, but his own stimulus package and his bank bailout proposal hand BILLIONS more of our dollars to failed companies.
Urge the government to DO WHAT’S RIGHT: Stop the bailouts!

Sign the petition and tell a friend now!
