Page after Page of Reasons to Hate Obamacare

Posted by truthpills on 2009/07/28

By Alan Caruba Sunday, July 26, 2009

Here are just a few very good reasons to hate Obamacare:

• Page 22: Mandates audits of all employers that self-insure!
• Page 29: Admission: your health care will be rationed!
• Page 30: A government committee will decide what treatments and benefits you get (and, unlike an insurer, there will be no appeals process)
• Page 42: The “Health Choices Commissioner” will decide health benefits for you. You will have no choice. None.
• Page 50: All non-US citizens, illegal or not, will be provided with free healthcare services.
• Page 58: Every person will be issued a National ID Healthcard.
• Page 59: The federal government will have direct, real-time access to all individual bank accounts for electronic funds transfer.

Ignorant America: Just How Stupid Are We?

Posted by truthpills on 2009/07/28

By Rick Shenkman, Tomdispatch.com. Posted July 2, 2008.
Millions of Americans are embarrassingly ill-informed and they do not care that they are.

“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.” — Thomas Jefferson

Just how stupid are we? Pretty stupid, it would seem, when we come across headlines like this: “Homer Simpson, Yes — 1st Amendment ‘Doh,’ Survey Finds” (Associated Press 3/1/06).

“About 1 in 4 Americans can name more than one of the five freedoms guaranteed by the First Amendment (freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly and petition for redress of grievances.) But more than half of Americans can name at least two members of the fictional cartoon family, according to a survey.

“The study by the new McCormick Tribune Freedom Museum found that 22 percent of Americans could name all five Simpson family members, compared with just 1 in 1,000 people who could name all five First Amendment freedoms.”

When Debtors Decide to Default

Posted by truthpills on 2009/07/28

By DAVID STREITFELD
Published: July 25, 2009

Melissa Birks is being stalked. Her cellphone keeps ringing, always from a caller marked “unknown.” She says she knows it is her credit card company wondering why she stopped making payments. Ms. Birks, who owes $28,830, has nothing to say.

Those on the front lines of the debt industry say there is a small but increasingly noticeable group of strapped consumers who, like Ms. Birks, are deciding they will simply stop paying. After loading up on debt eagerly provided by the card companies during the boom times, these people now find themselves trapped in an endless cycle where they are charged interest on interest and fees upon fees while the lenders get government bailouts.

They are upset — at the unyielding banks and often at their free-spending selves — and are pre-emptively defaulting. They could continue to pay for a while longer but instead are walking away. “You reach a point where you embrace the darkness of default,” said Adam Levin, chairman of the financial products Web site Credit.com.

‘$20 Per Gallon’ by Christopher Steiner

Posted by truthpills on 2009/07/28

Christopher Steiner looks ahead and projects, $2 at a time, how rising gasoline prices will transform civilization.

How the Inevitable Rise in the Price of Gasoline Will Change Our Lives for the Better

Christopher Steiner
Grand Central: 276 pp., $24.99

During the summer of 2008, Americans found out just how much was too much to pay for gas. On July 11, a barrel of oil hit $147.27, which translated into $4.11 for a gallon of regular gas at the pump — the highest price ever reached in the U.S. And that was just the average. In some places, the price got close to $5 a gallon. It was the Summer of Pain.

Many people who’d never heard of “peak oil,” or who’d been trading in one SUV for another, or who’d scoffed at the idea that Americans would ever drive less, suddenly learned that when the price of a finite commodity spikes, even cherished habits change. And it’s not just about driving: Our entire American way of life, in fact much of the global economy, has been built over decades on cheap oil: Seafood and plastic toys from China can flow freely around the world. The price of bread and milk stays low. Airlines can engage in price wars.

Record lows, global cooling across U.S.

Posted by truthpills on 2009/07/28

Pete Chagnon – OneNewsNow – 7/27/2009 5:30:00 AM

People all across the U.S. are asking a similar question: “What happened to summer?”

A check on Twitter will find a recurring tweet theme from people in New England. For example, “It’s so depressing that it’s the middle of July, cloudy, and barely 70 [degrees].” Another reads, “Had to wear my winter coat; it was 48 degrees this morning…in July!”

Marc Morano with ClimateDepot.com says all across America, record low temperatures have been broken throughout the summer. He blames that on a recent trend of global cooling that has been in place for more than seven years.

Spitzer: Federal Reserve is ‘a Ponzi Scheme, an Inside Job’

Posted by truthpills on 2009/07/28

By Daniel Tencer

July 26, 2009 “Raw Story” — The Federal Reserve — the quasi-autonomous body that controls the US’s money supply — is a “Ponzi scheme” that created “bubble after bubble” in the US economy and needs to be held accountable for its actions, says Eliot Spitzer, the former governor and attorney-general of New York.

In a wide-ranging discussion of the bank bailouts on MSNBC’s Morning Meeting, host Dylan Ratigan described the process by which the Federal Reserve exchanged $13.9 trillion of bad bank debt for cash that it gave to the struggling banks.

Spitzer — who built a reputation as “the Sheriff of Wall Street” for his zealous prosecutions of corporate crime as New York’s attorney-general and then resigned as the state’s governor over revelations he had paid for prostitutes — seemed to agree with Ratigan that the bank bailout amounts to “America’s greatest theft and cover-up ever.”

The Real Unemployment Rate Hits a 68-Year High

Posted by truthpills on 2009/07/28

Comparing the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ “U-3” and “U-6” rates.

By John Miller

July 26, 2009 “Dollars & Sense ” — -Although you have to dig into the statistics to know it, unemployment in the United States is now worse than at any time since the end of the Great Depression.

From December 2007, when the recession began, to May of this year, 6.0 million U.S. workers lost their jobs. The big three U.S. automakers are closing plants and letting white-collar workers go too. Chrysler, the worst off of the three, will lay off one-quarter of its workforce even if it survives. Heavy equipment manufacturer Caterpillar and giant banking conglomerate Citigroup have both laid off thousands of workers. Alcoa, the aluminum maker, has let workers go. Computer maker Dell and express shipper DHL have both canned many of their workers. Circuit City, the leading electronics retailer, went out of business, costing its 40,000 workers their jobs. Lawyers in large national firms are getting the ax. Even on Sesame Street, workers are losing their jobs.

The official unemployment rate hit 9.4% in May—already as high as the peak unemployment rates in all but the 1982 recession, the worst since World War II. And topping the 1982 recession’s peak rate of 10.8% is now distinctly possible. The current downturn has pushed up unemployment rates by more than any previous postwar recession (see Table 1).

It Ain’t Over Until the Jobs Come Back — Period!

Posted by truthpills on 2009/07/27

July 26, 2009

So I’m watching these talking heads on CNBC telling America that the signs of a recovery are there. They are lying and not just merely misled. They are flat lying, hoping some suckers out there will start making purchases to jump-start America’s consumer-driven engine, and to a small degree it is working. All I can tell you is this: When your money is spent, it is GONE, okay? If there is not a corresponding and reliable, ongoing source of income to offset your purchases, don’t make the purchases. Is there anyone, outside of Jackson County, Oregon, the stupidest county in all the Universe, that does not understand this concept? (Jackson County, Oregon has about 210,000 residents, and they maintain something like 13-15 library branches to keep a bunch of otherwise needless people employed on the taxpayers’ dime. The residents of Jackson County largely think this is a great idea, yet the population in general is terribly uneducated and has nothing to show for all the libraries. Yes, they really are intensely stupid here!)

Unless and until the U.S. Jobs Report begins to list positive job gains, this recession/depression is not over, and I don’t care what any alleged financial expert has to say otherwise.

Former Belgian Mayor Crusades Against Chemtrails

Posted by truthpills on 2009/07/27

Chellow’s unarmed blog
July 25, 2009

First appeared in De Gentenaar, July 26, 2009.

“We are massively being poisoned and brainwashed” Former mayor Peter Vereecke (53) of Evergem wants the justice department and the city council to act against planes that are according to him spraying day and night disease causing germs and chemicals all over the world. ”Rest assured I am not insane”

“Don’t confuse this with contrails”, said Vereecke. “Those are harmless condensation trails that are only visible for a few seconds. On the other hand chemtrails are clouds of chemicals and disease causing germs that are deliberately sprayed on us to manipulate our behaviour. De councilmen and – women were stunned and listened to his every word. At last some other subject than a loose tile or a backed-up sewage pipe.
